I have decided it`s time to relent and jack it in, not because of any fault in my driving, but because I`m 77. The thing is, do I just cut it up into small pieces or send it to the DVLC?

Unless there is a medical reason that you can no longer drive then you could just wait for it to expire and not renew it.
77 isn't that old Carlton.... but I think you can keep it.... in case you ever need more proof of ID
I would keep it as another form of ID
However, in answer to your question [the point that a lot of people miss, including myself] you could send it to the DVLA with a covering letter.
put it in a drawer carlton. just in case you nead it in the future,,,,,,,,,,,,, i hope your well.
Keep it until it expires, always handy for proof of identity. Especially when you buy your booze ☺
I used mine for ID purposes recently (I'm in the middle of moving). I haven't driven for years as I consider myself too old. Response action is too slow, eyesight is not exactly improving, ability to judge distances and speeds getting worse. A danger to myself and other drivers on the road, not to mention pedestrians who would be well advised to get out of the way if they saw me coming. I am just leaving it until it expires, next year, and then I shall not renew it.

My thanks to all, I`ll hang on it then.
It would seem, as in all government departments, that filling in a form is necessary.

Starbuck, I admire you a lot, you have proved a post I put on the other day, I respect your admission that you think you are not safe to drive, there are a lot of people that will not admit they are unsafe either through health, sight, reaction, it must be one hell of a thing to do at your age, I hope you all the very best.
