my partner is generally tidy about the place, (but doesn't do the washing up) and keeps telling me it's like an obsticale course around the place. i'm so tired after a days work lately that i reguraly do last nights washing up in the evening and then cook meal for that night and leave that washing up for the next evening.

This is the only thing my wife and I ever argue over. I'm a neat freak, she prefers "the young ones flat" look. Thankfully my boys are all like me, so the house is tidy purely by majority living, but when I first moved in with her there was piles of weird "stuff" everywhere, drove me absolutely barmy.
somewhere between the two. Not spotless, but there's no mould in the fridge and cooker thick with grease.
I have the same problem as arburgirl - moved into my house Feb and used an excuse that we'd not unpacked properly. Not sure how long I can last that one out.
What annoys me is there's so much STUFF everywhere that it's a nightmare to keep tidy. Im a big fan of 'piles to sort out later'.
I actually looks a bit like a student house with instruments, gadgets and other strange stuff about!

Kim and Waynetta. My flatmate is a total slob, and would probably turn into a Life of Grime figure without me to clear up his toast crusts. I'm no neat freak, but I take the bins out when they need doing, rather than balancing tea bags and Lucozade bottles up on top of each other like landfill Jenga.
Have you 4get? Bet you can't beat a shrunken head, an 6 foot bagpuss chair, mock Titanic lifebelt in the loo, animal print bed that growls when you get into it (I kid you not) and about 1/2 ton of just jumble and clutter that no-one normal would keep, like empty bottles, scripts she'd been turned down for, half finished "projects" ( think Blue Peter) and a life size gutted theatrical torso of the last man she went out with? I love my wife but she's a random messy c0w :)
I grew up with neat freak parents, my mum is the sort who tells you to dry your feet before you get out of the shower so you don't get the bathroom wet and she irons teatowels and underwear!
Saying that when she comes to stay with me I find myself picking up after her and thinking " would you do that in your own home" and feeling very old ;)
I used to work with some realy untidy guys and used to find myself subconsciously tidying up there desks (rubber bands, paper clips and stationery all over), they used to drive me mad and have no idea how they can work like that. Have to tidy my desk and put everything neat and straight before I go home.
