For reasons known only to him, my youngest has decided he wants a hedgehog shaped birthday cake next week. I'm not looking for recipes but I would appreciate any tips on how I could achieve the hedgehog shape. Many thanks in advance.

no help on this one - but have a totally easy one for a spaghetti bolognaise cake - and impessive if you want

How about a swiss roll? say its a hedgehog that's been on a diet! and make the frosting bit more rigid, then make peaks with it for the spikes.

You can tell i'm no Delia Smith cant you?

Thanks for the offer mortie but the little cherub has his heart set on a hedgehog. I've made loads of cakes over the years (a 4 turret castle and a butterfly shaped cake last year) but this one has me stumped. I can bake but unfortunately I have no imagination and this one's got me beat.

lol boo...an anorexic hedgehog. You obviously went to the same cake decorating school as me!

Right, here goes, my dearly beloved used to make these for all of her kids birthdays and even now has been known to put one together and the do look very good.

So, make your chocolate cake recipe and bake it in two sponge tins, when cooled sandwich the two together with whatever filling you want. Then cut the circle in half and sandwich the two halves together so that you now have a very thick semi-circle. Place it flat side down onto you cake board, one end will be the hedgehog's nose so you cut a little crescent out of each side of the nose to make his snout. Shave a little off the tops of the sides of the body to give a little less 'upright' look. Cover the whole thing with chocolate butter icing and then use halved chocolate buttons all over to act as the spines. Leave the snout smooth and use a couple of brown Smarties for eyes and sketch in whiskers with a cocktail stick or somesuch .

I hope all that made sense :-)

lol thikasabrik...i read this out to Mr Boo....and he suggested a swiss roll with cocktail sticks in it for the spikes.......im roaring laughing here

boo, should I jump up and down on it to make it look like road kill while I'm at it???? On second thought, the cocktail sticks might damage my tootsies!!!

fitzer, nip out to the off licence and buy Mrs Fitzer an expensive bottle of wine for me. She may have just saved my life! Many thanks.

lol, love the pics- but isnt that last one my swiss roll with cocktail sticks one??????????
For some strange reason, Ermintrude has given you a link to the picture of a Hedgehog cake on the Cadbury site without linking to the instructions for making it! This is what you need:

Chris

(PS: It looks really cute. Will you make one for me? :-) )

I've downloaded the pic and instructions from the Cadbury's site...many thanks to ermintrude and buenchico. A special thanks to boo for making me laugh!

I shall save some cake for you all to share! xxxx

easy peasy, you bake your sponge in a pyrex mixing bowl to get the curved top, then trim down the sides so its kind of a rectangle with 2 short curved ends, a curved top and two long straight sides. Frost generously with choccy frosting and use those slivers of almond stuck in in close lines for spikes (if no one is nut allergic, if they are then peak up the frosting like snow on a chrissy cake or use choc buttons set upright.) Cut feet out of brown ready to roll and use ready to roll for eyes and nose or an almond for the nose and choc buttons wiith blobs of icing for the eyes. Add a half eaten gummy worm coming out of the mouth for reality factor!!
I remember seeing a hedgehog cake a month or so ago, I think it was in Sainsburys. So you could always cheat and see if you can buy one from there! Marks & Spencers also do some great (and yummy!) novelty cakes. The one I saw had loads of those little chocolate flakes (like you get in 99 ice creams) all over for the spikes, and fondant icing eyes & paws
What a nice thread.I remember making one of these cakes for my eldest sons 1st birthday from the Cadburys Book. I made it in two pyrex pudding basins and then the frosted icing etc...and a glace cherry for the snout. This brought back memories !! Perhaps I'll make him another one for his 30th !!!
Chocolate flakes work well as spines as too...
Ohhh The cakes are so sweet I want one too! I hope your son likes his cake and happy birthday to him!
