A bunch of us would take a house apiece and shove old newspapers up the drain pipes and then on a signal we'd set it on fire. For a few seconds the flames would be drawn up the pipe and shoot about 20 feet into the air and the noise could be heard all over the village. Couldn't do it now-a-days with the plastic pipe we use but every house in the village would need the old cast iron pipes repainting every November
being a Londoner born & bred I had never heard of Mischief night [4th Nov] before I had a daughter in law who hailed from Batley nor the expressiom "chumping" which means [ so she said] the gathering of wood for the bonfire, we went into fits of laughter when she told us and she couldnt believe we didnt know !
