Getting all my teeth out!!!
20 Answers
Hi all
I am having all my teeth removed shortly - not at my request I might add but for medical reasons, to say I am scared to death would be an understatement, I've had teeth out before and felt fine a day after but am not sure what to expect when they all come out. I will be getting dentures fitted immediately and will be allowed home same day, does anyone have any idea how long I will need off work and what to expect in terms of recovery?
Many thanks

I have no idea why, I should ask my parents actually, but I remember being off school for a week afterwards and there's lots of photographs of me looking very groggy. I would have been about six at the time, so completely different I know... but thought I'd add my 2 pence worth anyway :-)
I really feel for you, I hate dentists with a passion... probably to do with the childhood incident!
Are you being fully sedated?

I can only generalise, but your recovery will depend upon many factors including:
- number of teeth being extracted
- simple or 'surgical' extractions
- age
- smoker/non-smoker
- underlying medical condition
You may only need a day off work, but maybe wise to allow for a few more.
In terms of what to expect afterwards...
- pain
- swelling
- bleeding
- sutures (possibly)
- difficulty in adapting to the immediate dentures (possibly)
- difficulty in eating and speaking (possibly)
The immediate dentures will most certainly need easing and relining soon afterwards to take into account post-extraction shrinkage of bone and soft tissues.
Hope this helps, but whoever is treating you should discuss this all with you as part of the consent for treatment

I had 6 teeth out on my lower jaw a few weeks ago, and actually I didn't feel too bad, but there was a fair amount of swelling afterwards, and although I'm not working at present, I would not have wanted to go back to work for at least 2 days afterwards, so I would think that you would probably need a week - are you having a general anaesthetic? The main problem I had (which you won't have, if they are removing all your teth) is they had to take out one tooth that was meant to be holding the bottom denture securely, so I've been measured for a new one, but probably won't get it until after Christmas now. I really hope that everything goes well for you, but probably thinking about it is worse than having it done. I also took painkillers before I went in, which seemed to help. One thing you may do is lisp with the new dentures, but once you get dentures worn in, your speech gets used to it. Good luck.
As I said, I had ALL my teeth taken out when I was a child.
I honestly, to this day, have no idea why though?
I don't have any trouble with them now. Apart from a painful wisdom tooth that had to come out, they're in "good nick for someone who hates going to the dentist"... according to the man that ripped it out.

I took my brother to hospital to have all his teeth out and I was amazed - I took him in at 8 in the morning.....at 10.00 am I took him home. Couldn't believe it was over so quickly.
After he'd had them out, they sat him in a chair for about 15 mins, then asked if he could get onto his feet (he could, but he was wobbly). They asked if my OH and I would mind taking him home to recover as they needed the chair for the next patient.
