I suspect she just quoted her own number wrong - as it was house insurance they had her name and address - but goodness knows how she knew my Memorable Information; perhaps they didn't ask? Maybe if your fraudster ordered something to be delivered, they'll also have an address to go on. Anyway, the card company cancelled my card, because it had been 'compromised' and issued a new one; I filled out some forms assuring them I'd never heard of the woman in question or the insurance company. My money was refunded, after a couple of further mixups by the card company. No idea if the police got involved.
I have heard that it makes a difference if you have a PIN number instead of just signing - if something goes wrong the bank is at fault for not recognising your signature, but with a PIN number it's your fault because they claim you must have given someone your number. It was said this is why they're all going over to PIN numbers, to avoid taking the blame for their errors - anyone know if this is true?
My understanding is that reputable traders will only post goods to the address belonging to the credit card owner.
