Anyone now why the tap water sometimes (occasionally) smells and tastes so foul? Does the water board sometimes add cleaner which maight taste? What about fluoride (or anything else)? This happens to both my house (40+ years old) and my brother in law's (brand new).

There are hundreds of different waters in supply in this country- all of them with different chemical analyses. Some waters require long and complicated treatments and others require little more than chlorination before going into supply.
Sorry, flip, but fluoride at 1 mg. per litre does NOT impart a taste to drinking water. A large number of taste complaints are due to problems in the consumers' premises which are often improved by simple means such as running the tap for a short while before using the water.
