i've just installed skype and although a webcam is built in to the computer do I still need a microphone to use it.Am stll using old computer till i get my ISP changed and to be honest don't know much about skype

You will need a microphone, surprised that it has a webcam and not a microphone,maybe worth googling to see if it has one built in and you were not aware.

When I installed Skype on my laptop, it took me through a 'set up' program where you test camera, mike,etc is working properly. I would have thought that if you have a camera, you would have a mike; BUT I may be wrong.

Try this...Open Skype ..select Tools/options/audio settings...there should be a box with a drop down menu to select the microphone/s available and slider to adjust the volume ....

If there is nothing there in the box then you don't have a mike installed....
