i am baffled why the powers that be chose to do this, they said it was a mistake, but if so, a stupid one.

Essentially a "landscape" version tube poster had the 2012 slogan in white writing right across its centre. HMS Belfast was located under the writing and interfered with its legibility, so the ship was removed (it wouldn't have been very visible); unfortunately it was also removed from different versions of the poster where its absence was all the more noticeable as the slogan was elsewhere.
I can understand an over enthusiatic graphic designer getting rid of HMS Belfast in order to make the visual 'cleaner' because for them the visual quality and layout often outweighs issues of accuracy.
It's a bit sad though that there were no checks and that no one in the 2012 Organisers office knows (or cares) enough about London to spot the difference.
