I think a lot of elderly people get overwhelmed by anything remotely technical and just forget about basic common sense. if they got a letter through the post asking for bank or credit card details they wouldn't respond but when exactly the same request comes via email for some reason they do respond.
My father is by no means stupid or losing his mind but he got caught by a scam email saying it was from AOL asking for his credit card details (Despite there being a flaming great big warning in the title bar of the email stating AOL will never ask for your credit card details by email)
