My car just passed its MOT but one of the advisories was 'Offside front constant velocity joint gaiter deteriated'. The guy also said that they put a cable tie on it.

In full bloke mode I looked at him nodding understandingly but am clueless as to what this is!
Can anyone explain in layman's terms what one is?!

No I can't, but I had something Advisory on my MOT cert last year - I didn't do anything about it, and they never mentioned it again when I took it to the same place for MOT this year!
drivers' side, rubber sock which covers part of steering, and is the thing which balances car when you corner, so both wheels are travelling at same speed!

*coughs*

asked the husband really!

......and get it fixed pronto, or the grease will get washed out and the joint will grind itself away leaving you with a bill for £100's. get a new one fitted now for a few quid.
It means that the rubber cover which protects the c.v. joint from grit and water has deteriorated to the point where it isn't doing it's job properly and needs a bit of help from a cable tie to keep contaminants out and the grease in. This is a temporary bodge and you should get a new one fitted othewise the next thing to be replaced will be the c.v. joint and that will cost much more.
Cath.. nothing to do with the steering.
"nothing to do with the steering."

It would be a fair bit harder to steer the car if the drive shaft couldn't bend sue to the CV joint!
and get it done soon!

husband thought it was my car for a moment but has regained cheek colour now!
If it was serious it would have failed, so cant be too terminal, depending on vehicle CV gaiter £5-£15 + labour
Chuck.. when a cv joint wears out it gets looser, unless overenthusiastic donutting welds it solid.
