how can I open MPG files on my computer (Windows/Vista etc)

At college, the tutor sends Audio files for our German/French etc on MPG files, but I cannot open them. I do have Windows media player, but it refuses to do the job, what other solution is there available (free, preferably). Thanks in advance.

MPEG-2 ?

Try vlc player.
