We are due to get a new car/van/mpv in July, is there any savings to be made in getting a diesel car or just go back to petrol?

It was never a good move to have a diesel car!
unless you do a lot of miles in a diesel rather than short trips, then you may save a bit but the servicing gobbles that up possibly.
lots to consider on both counts -they say that the newer turbo petrol engines can be quite economical - don't take any fuel figures quoted by the Makers as achievable,
best to see what you think you would liketo own & search the relevant owners forum to see more real fuel economy figures.
If you do short journeys, watch this before getting a diesel

Nonsense, Diesel used to save me a fortune in my car when I was on the road constantly, why do you think Taxi drivers use diesel?

It looks like we will be going back to petrol again, the DPF issue wouldn't be a problem as our servicing repairs etc are free and we use the dual carriageways and motorway quite regularly.
Across our fleet which is approx 80% diesel, we find that the BMWs are the only make who do anything like the claimed combined mpg. My own car a VW Bluemotion which should be doinf 67mpg is averaging around 55 at the moment with 13k miles on the clock. As a conservative driver I find that very poor. But still better than the petrol equivalent. Our cars cover anything between 15 and 50k miles per year so we do see the diesel as more economical.
when i was buying my last car the salesperson told me diesel was probably worth it if i drove over about 30 k a year. As i only do about 7k i got petrol. I deliberately drive incredibly carefully (never go over 2000 revs etc) but get nothing like the manufacturers claim for mileage
I drive a diesel, have no problem with it.
Where is the link to the price hike ?
Diesel prices are rising to allow garages to offset the headline making petrol prices
Make your own mind up !

Ah looks like more of a case of has happened, is continuing to happen, plus the debated rise for both fuels.

I recall when diesel was cheaper than petrol, then I got a diesel car, so must be my fault.
I live on the border between Northern Ireland and the Irish Republic. I drive a diesel, my wife drives a petrol. I fill up in the Republic, my wife fills up in the North. In this respect, we have our cake while still eating it.
