I had found Wynadotte using an anagram solver but couldn't see the foul play !

I think the first word of 9a must be sleeping (incompatable with Hereward THE WAKE) but that's as far as I've got

Maybe sleeping partner - isn't a theatrical backer called an angel - could that be the connection?

Hi Dave - apologies for confusion, having worked on (7,8) from letters you provided, leading to Hereward's author. Whitehill is spot on with Sleeping Partner (8,7) as in theatre angels. Regards, ja.
