unplug the camera, check the batteries are good, restart computer and plug USB back in and try again.

Tried all that , thanks anyway
Far too fiddly downloading from a camera. Buy a card reader (cheap on eBay or from Jessops or Maplin)if your PC does not have a SD card slot, and download straight from the card.
"Far too fiddly downloading from a camera. "
Let me get this straight:

Option 1: Connect camera to computer, open My computer, drag files, disconnect camera.

Option 2: Connect card reader to computer, open camera, remove card, insert card into card reader, open My computer, drag files, disconnect card reader, remove card, open camera, replace card.

Can you explain how option 1 is far too fiddly?
Camera - find lead, break nail opening usb cover, plug in lead, plug in to PC. Switch on Camera, find that the batteries are flat or that it is not recognised etc...

Card reader(assuming it is permanently attatched to PC) - open sd card cover remove card put into reader - sorted!

So FOR ME a reader is far less fiddly!! :)
Just to be a pain in the rs, I would not recommend taking the card out all the time to read it, eventually the gold tabs will wear on the card and in the camera and the card will become unreliable after time. Use this option only if the USB fails or if it a cheap camera ... !
Google for "<your camera make, model> + driver" and see if there is a driver available to download.
To Iggle piggle. No so. (BTW how much are cards these days? I just paid £6 for an 8gb Sandisk SDHC card. Just before I left Kodak in 2006, a 1gb card was £140!)
