wps file and xlr files

I have xp and office 97 and when i try to open wps and xlr files i cant .can anyone out there tell me why and what program would i need to open these files.

These are both MS Works files;

wps - is a word processor text file which has some support in both MS Word and MS Excel, depending on which version of Works was used to write it.

xlr - is a spreadsheet file which also has some support in Excel and again is version dependant.
