It certainly took you away from the noble warrior ethos that so many films attempt to portray when dealing with indiginous populations struggling to maintain their heritage in a modern world. My former girlfriend swears she dated the actress who played the mother, but actresses are born liars aren't they?
I saw it recently and I have to say that by the end I felt very numb, I wasn't sure what I was supposed to feel, of course I cried my way through most of the movie. I think though that it was a powerful movie but couldn't recommend it to anyone because I just found it too harsh and upsetting but maybe I am just being a girl!! I also think that actually it could have been set in any poor area of the world and the main story didn't really have a lot to do with the Maori "struggle" in particular, like I say it could have been set elsewhere easily.
