Black Mould/Damp on ceiling

Could anybody give me any advice how to clean/get rid of black mould/damp from my daughters bedroom ceiling. She is hoping to paint it this weekend. Do we need special paint to paint over it or will ordinary emulsion be ok. Any help would be very much appreciated.TIA

Scrub it off with some bleach (to kill the mould) then either use a stain blocker, or some white oil-based undercoat, then emulsion.
You might want to consider better ventilation to stop it happening again. Even a vent in the ceiling would help.

Dettol Mould and Mildew Remover works really well......apply it with a roller.

Had the same problem in my sons bedroom and cured it by spraying with a good bleach, domestos, and leaving a while and then washing off with damp cloth. Leave to dry and then paint over with polycell damp stain . It is brilliant stuff. Smells for a bit but the damp has never come back.Finishes white but let it dry and then emulsion over.Quite expensive , about a tenner for a small pot , but you get what you pay for, B and q sell it.
My sons damp was also in his bedroom as he would never open his window. No matter how cold try to open a window at the front and back of the house once a day for about an hour to get a through draught to ventilate the room

That Damp Stain smells like Copydex gone off .. if I remember rightly.

Yes it does. Really thick but apply as thickly as possible, thats the trick.

Do you know the cause of the damp/mould? If the cause isn't treated then it's likely to just come back. If on the ceiling, could it be a leak from somewhere that needs checking out?

If the ceiling is damp then it should be checked to make sure it is still safe and not damp (or could get so damp) enough that anything could leak through or cause it to fall in (like mine did the other weekend).

Could there be a leak in the roof (eg loose tile, especially in this weather) or is the boiler/water tank in the ceiling above her bedroom or nearby?

I got a mould and mildew remover spray, only a few quid and works very well. I use it on black mould on grouting too to keep that at bay. Watch if spraying on a ceiling though, better to squirt on a clean white cloth and use to wipe the mould off.

They are living spores .. so you need to kill it.
Bleach of some kind always seems the preferred treatment.
