I won't use mine in a garage, unless it is where it's unmanned, like Asda. I try to have enough money in case I am caught out in a situation.

The bit about not using a card in a garage is rubbish. All places now have the treminals where you put your card in your self and enter the PIN, you never hand the card to a cashier, same at shops and resturaunts. Resturaunts have mobile treminals which the waiter brings to you again you never hand the card over, you do it all yourself, even the pubs have these terminals now.
You should NEVER need to hand your card to anyone anywhere to pay.
Any place that asks you to hand over the card should be reported to the banks it is never nessesary now.
I would never be put off using my debit card in a garage or restaurant. I think there is the possibility of being a bit over sensative about these things and I'd rather not walk around with wads of cash in my purse.

The only place that I wouldn't use my card are these little shops that pop up in for a couple of weeks in town then disappear again - but then they are normally cash only anyway.
I very rarely carry cash about and use debit card for nearly everything. Never had a problem yet.
