In the unlikely (but in my view desirable) situation that the UK finally turns into a modern, grown-up republic and ditches the ludicrous nonsense that is "The Royal Family", who would you want to elect as a proper non-executive figurehead/president for the country ?

The Royal Family will do for me too.
sunny-dave - you may have offended a few Royalists - me included - I love the royal family - accept they aren't perfect but I'd hate the alterntive.
Stephen Fry for me! He is intelligent (so actually thinking about it, he would probably never consider becoming a politician), knowledgeable, sharp witted, loved by people from all walks of life. He is outspoken, seems an honest chap (hmmm, so no real chance of becoming a politician there then), is self-effacing, serious when appropriate and funny when appropriate, a great debater and representative of this country. He is a great actor, so could act his way out of embarrassing situations, lol. There is more one could say about him, but it would take too long. Either way, he would get my vote any day!!!
Call them the Royal Family if you must, just as long as they are elected democratically every 5/7 years. Personally I would rather see an elected President rather than a foreign family, with all its hangers on, sponging off the state
"The Royal Family will do for me too."

^ If good enough for Askyourgran, I would have to agree with her 100%......
