If the EU had been a bank, we could have gone to court and got our money back - tens of thousands for every man, woman and child in this country.

I love the way that despite the clear fact that the two pieces of legislation that turned the EEC into the EU (the Maastrict treaty and the Single European act) were both signed by Tory prime-ministers you cant bring yourself to blame them!

Hey JTP, Ted Heath signed the EEC treaty (Con) and John Major signed the Maastricht treaty (CON) and Gordon Brown signed the Lisbon treaty (LAB) have I now made my position clear - it is too late to start backtracking the future of the EU is all that mattes at the moment.

jake - calm down and lighten up - I wasn't laying blame, and this is meant to be a light hearted thread.

Having said that, the only time the British people had a direct say, we were sold a free trade area, and we got an "ever closer" union.

Not to mention Heath who started off the journey. Considering the Conservatives had a huge parliamentary majority in the eighties and an 18 year spell in power, rather than get us out of Europe, they got us more in it.

And seeing as each step of the way we were deeply involved in crafting the treaties, if there has been any mis-selling, it is us that have mis-sold rather than mis-bought.

Noraq - it's our money - we're the biggest net contributor to the EU - we pay more than Germany or France.
