Has just told me that his other half is nearly 40 and she has never ever had a cold in all her life. Is that possibly that somebody has gone all these years without a cold?

In a similar vein I have travelled for much of my life and I've always eaten local foods and drank local water. I do have a few common sense rules such as making sure I see something cooked and I won't eat or drink something that looks or smells suspect. Also, I don't drink water when the locals don't. I've never been ill abroad but many people find that hard to believe.

Like Sqad, I doubt it too. There are close on 300 viral types responsible for given us a cold and/or related illnesses. These organisms can be demonstrated to be present throughout the temperate world every day of the year in varying quantities. The chances of not encountering these viruses in our everyday lives and succumbing to the illness are very slim indeed.
I'd like to ask this lady if she has ever lived, worked or been in close proximity to a person with a streaming cold. A cold is really not difficult to catch.
There has never been a recorded instance of a person being "immune" from a cold.
