Who says you can't have you cake and eat it? Where did that come from?

The expression is a corruption which is why it appears meaningless today. It was originally: 'You can't eat your cake and have it', indicating that one cannot have the best of both worlds and so on, that choices must be made about when one takes one's pleasure.
