bowel specialist

After many years of suffering from constipation, and various tablets from the doctor along with lifestyle change ie diet/exercise. Doing everything you should do for treatment of constipation yet I still have it. So my doctor is now refering me to see a bowel specialist. Now I'm thinking tests, having a colonoscopy! which makes me feel a bit anxious. Also worried that there might be a more serious condition. Has anybody been to see a bowel specialist? If so what should I expect?

Sorry about your problem but getting it sorted is definately the right thing to do.Usually,befor a colonoscopy,you will be given an efficient laxative which is likely to be more effective than those you have already tried,inorder to completely clear the bowel,you are likely to be sedated as this will assist the endoscopy specialists to carry out a thorough examination of the bowel using a colonoscope which affords fibre-optic viewing of the area.As you should be sedated you probably won't remember anything about it so don't worry too much about the procedure.Hope that everything goes well for you,and your problem will be sorted.

hi it sounds silly but after years of suffering with my bowels find that eating an activai with prune yoghurt and a cup of tea really helps to move my bowels each morning,try to get up the same time each day also to get your bosy in to a routine.im finding this is really helping....obvoiusly if you have tried various things and its n ot working for you then you must see your doctor.i find my problem is linked with stress.hope this helps.good luck.

Hi K99, I'm sorry to hear about your constipation. I suffer from Colitis (ulcers in your colon) and I suffered with constipation and blood in my stools for a while. (Sorry about the nasty stuff there!) I've had two colonoscopies and they're nothing to fear. Honest. It all sounds very scary, but you will be sedated and won't feel a thing. You do come round after the 'inspection' with rather a lot of wind, so don't be afraid when you fart very loudly! I nearly blew the toilet off the wall after my first colonoscopy, it fightened me to death!! So, just relax, be calm and strong. You will do fine and I will say a little prayer for you, don't be afraid, you're not alone. I hope everything turns out okay for you, take care and God Bless.
