Did you see this incident in Dutch football yesterday?

In Ajax's match last night a drunken hooligan ran on the field and attacked the keeper who retaliated. The referee produced a red card and sent the keeper off. The Ajax manager then ordered all his players off the pitch in protest.

The drunken fan got what he deserved. I believe the red card was later rescinded.

Saw it on the news tonight. If the goalie had just deflected to intruder instead of trying to kick seven bells out of the stupid boy, all would have been well. Instead he behaved like a yobbo in front of a crowd of thousands. The ref was right, the Ajax team manager is a brick short of a lorryload if he thinks he's right in taking the team off pitch.

Tricky one. If it is self defence fine. But just lashing out like that falls under the same footballing law as if he had done it to a player. Sending off correct.

I would argue that fault lies with the Ajax Amsterdam Security and club
The AZ Alkemaar goalie would expect safety from crowd interference.
Whether the red card was valid,..it was violent conduct,but..not part of the game,which the ref was presiding over.

it looked to me like legitimate self-defence on the part of the keeper. Calls for restraint by someone who'd being attacked by a hooligan may be noble but sound rather unrealistic to me.

(i) apparently the red card has been withdrawn by the Dutch FA

(ii) the goalkeeper was involved in a "liasion" with the fan's wife/gf......therefore the likes of Giggs and Terry should watch their backs!

It was assault though, he went to far after he had flattened him and he would have seen the security closing in - they were in his eye sight.

The withdrawal of the AZ team was correct as the very incident showed that Ajax could not guarantee safety to the visiting players.

The manager was concerned for the safety of his players, quite rightly when one of them has just been attacked. The red card was recinded. The goal keeper acted in self defence against some loonie. The ground security was at fault and the home club should be penalised.
