Why is it mostly men in top positions as chefs in TV programmes, hotels and restaurants ?

Because men own them.

same goes for hairdressing too, i think that they do it because they love it and so they take it as far as possible, women, on the whole, have got too much else that they have to do to make really successful careers out of anything, the majority of the women who do break free of the housewife / carer stereotype try to get as far from it as possible. i think it comes down to opportunity rather than motivation.

treaclefight - see where you are coming from part of the way, strong woman behind the man kinda stuff. but, you don't think successful women can get out there and do all their stuff?

yes i think strong women do, but i dont think they want to do it in careers which aren't related to there alleged 'natural talents', . my point (not very well explained i admit) is that on the whole men are more likely to get the opportunity to take their careers as far as possible whereas women are more likely to have to work round family commitments. fields such as catering / hairdressing employ huge numbers of people, the majority of them being women and i'm saying that the fact that the men rise to the top is not a reflection of men being more talented or that there are more men in that field, but it does reflect that they get mroe opportunities and less obstacles. personally, i dont see why men need a strong woman behind them, women dont get back up, why should men, i'm looking forward to getting back to work, couple more years with the kids and then i can do it, but i dont want to be going into catering / cleaning / childcare or any of the traditionally female dominated professions beacuase i get enough of it at home and that why i think that the women who get the chance to suceed tend not to do it in the traditional female roles. phew, thats my post feminist rant for the day over with, thankyou.
