I was thinking of getting something like this http://www.bluetoothworld.co.uk/icedevice.php (but not at that price!) but I don't understand why it (and others like it) come with a remote control. surely fiddling with a tiddly remote whilst driving is just as dangerous as not using any handsfree device.

or is the remote just for playing music?

I only want to be able to make/receive calls safely.

any thoughts, please?

I've used a Parrot 3100 in three cars now. It hardwires through the radio power supply and the incoming part of the call is through the car speakers giving good clarity. It also has voice dialling and caller id.
It's more expensive but in my opinion it's vastly superior to the kind of thing you're looking at.
Parrot are the market leaders in this sort of thing by a long way, but they are a little more expensive.

thanks chaps.. I don't think I can afford that right now, plus I'd have to pay someone to do the wiring stuff for me.

I'm looking for a simpler plug-in device.
Parrot are great! : )
Handle even things like iPhone radio podcasts, etc without messing about.
Bluetooth earpiece if too expensive.

nooooooo... I want a plug in thingie. I have a bluetooth headset, and I don't like using it for every trip.
What .. one of those you plug into a fag lighter socket .. with a speaker in it?
Question Author
no, one that plugs into the fag lighter and cuts in through the car speaker system!

see link above.

don't make me come and slap you!
OK ... I'll look if I have to ...
Parrot 3100 works for me!
Simple controls, no remote,
+ voice control
Looks ok to me .. but will undoubtedly be made in China .. so there will be no support .. AND those type of remotes (it probably controls playback of tracks from iPhones, etc and USB) have problems with that button 'leaf' design.
Have you scoured eBay to see what's out there?

Now can I get that slap?
Question Author
Baldric, I can't afford a parrot or to have it fitted (see above).

AlBags, I don't want the remote.. you can't use that while you're driving. do you think you can answer calls from the actual unit? it's today's Groupon offer for £22.

I think I may be handing out a few slaps by the end of the day ;o)

I've seen similar and the same on Ebay.. some of them look really crap quality.
I cannot find a definitive answer ..
Promo video everywhere .. and on Youtube as 'bluetoothworld ice device'
There are buttuns on each side .. but I think that one large blob on the front may well be the button for incoming calls/hang up.
I'm sure you wouldn't use the remote to answer. I think the telephone icon on remote is to select plugged in file browser in the attached phone.
You could try sending an email to their support ..

cheers AlBags, slap withdrawn.. for now, anyway :o)

At leats with these you can see them in your local store and decide if they are tacky or not and even get information on them from a spotty assistant .

thanks Teddy.. I've actually got one of those "clip on your sun visor" types but it's very temperamental.

I should do that though, have a lookie in the shops..
