NZ Contact problem
3 Answers
A relative living in Christchurch, New Zealand has not been in touch since before the recent earthquake. We know he was planning to take his family (wife & two young children) away for a few days, but he always telephones his Mum on Christmas Day and did not.
We have tried emailing and phoning his office, got the answerphone, but his mobile just does not connect.
It is totally out of character and as each day passes we are more concerned.
We wonder if there is some problem with cell phone communication??

Communications in the Christchurch area were certainly disrupted, as this quote shows:
"People were being urged to use text instead of voice calls on mobile phones to check on friends and relatives, as the phone lines still in operation were increasingly jammed"

says
"Telecom spokesperson Katherine Murphy said that the network has held up and, after initial cell phone overloading, everything seems to be back up and running and there is no obvious damage to their infrastructure"
