wasn't sure where to post this... When I take a Lottery (Lotto, Euromillions, etc) ticket to a shop to be checked, how can I be sure the assistant won't tell me it's not a winner when it is, keep it and cash it in themselves?

Demand the return of the ticket - I always do.
You can't.

I always ask the customer if they want it back, if they don't I tear it half in front of them and put it in a bin.
*tear it in half*
I suspect that, even torn in half, with a claim that the damage was accidental, a ticket could still be accepted as a winner by Camelot. Best ask for it back.
The machine also gives an audio sound for both a winner and a loser ticket.
Why take it to the shop, log on to the National Lottery site, go to check results, then you can be absolutely sure and destroy the ticket yourself. Even better why not play on line then they will e-mail you if you win.
I've just remembered a case in Dundee some years ago, when a shop assistant kept a winning ticket for herself after saying that it hadn't won anything...
