He said owning a gun facilitates murder, not that it drives someone to murder.
The greater effort involved in killing with a knife means that a person needs a much greater conviction to kill in order to go to such lengths, than would someone who owns a gun.
I dont see why anyone need ever own a gun in there home, other than a farmer. Only farmers should get a license. People who want to shoot recreationally dont need to own their own guns. Guns should just be licensed to shooting ranges for recreational use, where they must be securely stored.

the two incidents regarding guns and blade were different in the way the perpetrator achieved their goal.
for instance the gun incident happened in a sports hall where exit was much harder than the field used by the blade weapon incident..
also there was so it appears from what i can gather only 1 adult in the gun incident however there were 4 adults when the blade incident happend ...
also the diferance in the attackers was the gun incident attacker was prepaired to not only kill but die also in his actions ...
the blade incident attacker seems to have only intented to wound and obviously didnt intend to die along wth his victims..
again i say the gun is not the reason for the attacks it is mearly the chosen object used to facilitake the attack when available ... and again i would point out that the car in the uk kills wounds and cripples more people than any mad man on a rampage ... for the PC amoung us i should say " mad person "
tight gun controls already exist and compaired to countries where they do not we have far fewer gun related crimes , however unlike guns swords and knife's do not need licensing , and we still have a far higher number of incidents of those being used to kill wound and harm people than guns ...
we do not call for cars to be banned due to the number of deaths where the car was the main weapon used , same goes for knife .

Cars offer a great benefit to society so we are willing to forgo a substantial number of car deaths in order to have this advantage. Private gun ownership, however, offers negligible benefits to society other than to farmers livelihoods.
Of course, if someone has a strong enough conviction to do so, he will kill using whatever weapon he can lay his hands on, but if that weapon happens to be a gun he may kill 10 or 20 people given the opportunity, versus the 1 or 2 he would have killed if he had only a knife or a sword.
You'd be hard pressed to find an example of umpteen killings being made by one man wielding a blade. And I really dont think you can read anything into the fact that, in those two examples, the gun man killed himself but the blade attacker didn't. Ending your life with a blade is much harder, and very painful compared with a shot to the head!

no stricter controls will solve the issue of guns being involved in killings and attempted killings as previously stated before hand guns being owned by people of the general public have been banned already . however they are stil used in murders, tighter controls will never stop this.
farmers , vets , zoo's and wild life parks as well as big game hunting reserves , pest control all use guns and any number of these guns can find themselves in the wrong hands for all the wrong reasons. tougher controls will not solve this issue either.
i would be more inclinded to go the direction of greater " care " for those at risk of the mental attitude that points toward the inclination to commit murder and physical harm to others, but sadly this would increase the strain on the already stretched health system , after all its due to this strain that we have whats comonly called care in the community.
