In July 2008 at Blackfriars I noted two train sets 460425 and 460449 but the latest Platform 5 stock book says there are no such things. Any ideas as to what I really saw, please. Madness beckons...............

the 460s still exist, but I think are not used at the moment. They were originally built for Gatwick Express in about 2001.
would the other digits be the vehicle numbers ?
possibly south-eastern 46x "networker" type units, but none of these carried unit numbers in the 4xx series.

the thameslink class 319/4 units were numbered to include units 425 and 449, but it's unlikely you'd have mistaken 319 for 460.

so, you're best guess would be as good as anyone's.
The 460 "Juniper" units were indeed used on the Gatwick Express service. They are distinguishable from other Juniper stock by their (largely cosmetic) streamlined cab noses.

Gatwich Express was taken over by Southern in 2008. The 460s were phased out in 2010 and I believe they are now in store awaiting re-use by South West trains. But there were only eight sets, numbered 460001 to 460008. You could not have confused the set numbers with the carriage numbers as the latter have five digit numbers in the 67xxx and 74xxx ranges.

So I too do not know what you saw!!!
