"Credit Unions are mutual financial organisations which are owned and run by their members for their members. Once you've established a record as a reliable saver they will also lend you money but only what they know you can afford to repay".
In the middle sixties I joined our local fledgling Credit Union by opening an account for £1. I had just got my first job and was able to borrow £500 immediately to buy a car. It was a "leg-up" which I greatly appreciated and I have been a member ever since. For a long time, the Manager's Christian name was Kevin and "going to see Uncle Kevin" became a euphemism for going for a loan! A great organisation!
