scan and tests at 11 weeks?

been to see the midwife today,and she told me about the new test come in which you can have at 11 weeks to see if you are high risk for downs syndrome,didn't know about this and it baffled me slightly,has anyone had this,what are your opinions?do you get results there and then?
thanks,was excited but now the thought of deciding to have this or not has thrown me a bit in my emotional state!! and 'one born every minute' isn't helping me!lol..

I am sure I did that with my two - is it just a blood test they do? It gives you a score based on your likliehood to fall into high risk for downs and if it shows that you are, then you can opt to have further tests. If it is the same thing, you wait a while for the results and there is no risk to your baby and it will just say something like - risk is 1 in 1000 or 1 in 200 etc.

I was never brave enough to have the tests although my friend did and she was orignally told there was a high risk of down's but a couple of days later they changed the way they worked it out and said there ws no risk. Even though I was knocking on when I had thing 1 and thing 2 I couldn't have had the test as they can't do it when you are having twins.

The risk is higher the older you are.

You have to wait for the results. If they come back as high risk they'll offer you an amnio (sp) I think that's performed at about 16 weeks.

The chances are that you and baby will be absolutely fine.

When my daughter was offered this test she didn't know whether to have it. I asked her what she would do if she had the test and was told she was high risk (and had further amnio to confirm presence of Down's), she said she would keep the baby no matter what, so I said "then why even have the test?".

hi annie,yes its also a more detailed scan to see the thickness of folds to back of the neck and the blood test,i was too late to have it with my son so didn't know about it.

it doesnt just test for down syndrome. Its a triple test, downs, edwards syndrome and another.

maybe a bit more advanced now then 4get - mine are aged 11 and 10 now so I think I have forgotten. Personally I was the same as daffy's daughter - we had tried for years to get pregnant so I was keeping the baby anyway, but if there was no risk the it didn't do any harm to find out - I was 35 at the time.

if you had the results back as low risk it would probably stop you worrying as much throughout the rest of your pregnancy,thats probably the only reason i would have it just nice to hear other peoples opinions..x

if you are in the UK, your midwife should give you a booklet on all the test that you can, some are down to you if you want them. I got this booklet at my booking in appt at the hospital, my baby is now 8 weeks old.

this test just gives your personal risk factor, instead of them just doing this on your age etc.

the nuchal scan measures the thickness of the fold at back of babys neck and has been used at a lot of hospitals for years

there are also the standard blood tests done at around 16 weeks which look for factors that may indicate risk.

added to that (though was only done privately when i had mine, unless reason suggested otherwise) is a combined test where they take both results to get a better risk indication.

I paid for combined tests, senloods off a week before my scan and had a call within 2 hours of having scan with my results.

where i am you have the combined test - it looks at sever things 1) the nuchal tranlucency (fold at back of babay's neck) 2)blood test for the presence of hormones which would indicate a higher risk 3)other risk factors (age/history, bleeding) then they put all these into a computer programme and it comes up with a score (eg 1/100, 1/2000) as the risk of having a baby with down's syndrome.
