I am compiling a fund raising quiz for a local primary school and wondered if any ABers can suggest any cryptic clues to insects. I have a few already, such as;
Matt, Steve etc. Water-boatmen.
Measure this? Tapeworm.
Hot stuff. Firefly.
All help gratefully received.

Quiz completed, many thanks.

juliely Be careful that the title of your Quiz fits. Essentially, all insects have six legs - so that would rule out worms and spiders! Better to call the Quiz "Creepy Crawlies", say.

Watch out for alternative answers, such as "Measure this?" could give rise to INCHWORM rather than TAPEWORM.

Try to be sharp - would "Measure by this" be a better clue?

Will "Hot stuff" suggest "Firefly" to someone else? Would "Shoot to escape" tie it down better?

Having said all that you have chosen a good subject. If not already thought of, there's bluebottle, katydid, cricket, nymph, emmet. froghopper, leatherjacket, gnat (tang backwards), hornet (anag of throne), silverfish, termite, and the list goes on!

Good luck!
