do you think there would be a lot less trouble in the streets if trains and buses didnt stop at 11.30 ish and continued til the early hours at weekends and xmas etc?

would it lessen the amount of people just hanging about on the road waiting for taxis and potentially stealing others cabs causing conflict.

i havent been to town in ages for new year because the hassle of gettinbg taxis just pouts a downer on the night... but if i could just just om a train when im ready.

obviously there could be trouble on trains but there can be at any time really, and there probably wouldnt be a surge of people at any one time...

i realise it would cause other issues - like the need for extra staff, more security at stations and more cleanup (kebabs, vomit etc)
but would the extra revenue make it worthwhile for the rail companies?

Depending on what town or city you're in will depend just on how much more or less the companies make. It won't make a huge difference to subsidised routes

i was suggesting the freely available travel may help lessen it, simply by lessening the amount of people hanging about in the street waiting around while drunk ... not the same thing at all...

There would be a lot less trouble on the streets if pubs and clubs closed at a sensible hour, people went home at a reasonable time instead of disgorging in hoards from tacky drinking holes in the small hours and did not spend the time they are out drinking themselves into a senseless stupor. Whether or not they will be able to catch a bus home after doing that is immaterial as many of them are so ratted they cannot even find the bus stop.

They tried it here for a while. Buses going from town centre pick up points to various parts of town. They only travelled on the main roads so you'd get off at the nearest point to your house. The bus cost £2 each regardless of where you were going and had a security man on board.

It didn't last long, I don't know why...

Same around here Ummm; was just the 'main' route that carried on but so many drivers complained of being threatened they stopped it.

Most of ours are stopping early (7-8pm ish) but there are some special night buses on certain main routes, some running up to 4am. We have night buses usually though.

Trouble tends to depend on the route, some better than others and the Salford nightbus I used to get was one of the worst, people getting on covered in blood etc... (not even NYE!) and some nasty assaults (not even at night). My ones now are more studenty routes so at least busier and often packed and loud but safer.

I guess it's more usual here though dealing with that kind of thing and the aftermath of major concerts and such, even Take That fans got a lot of bad press:

"24 arrests... 21 crime reports....ambulance service dealt with around 606 incidents" and over 100 in A&E.

We have a local bus here that runs all night (as it serves the airport) and it starts at a nightlife area. All the drunks must come home by taxi anyway as there is never anyone on it in the early hours.

Our bus service is frightful at the best of times, there's no chance of anyone finding funds to extend it for the commuters and shoppers, let alone the drinkers.

I dont know about all england but they took the last buses off here years ago because of all the trouble on them. There was a couple of flyers that ran about 1.30am and 2.30am but they took those off too....

Apart from every obvious hole you could poke in this plan, there just isn't money to be made in running late trains and buses.

Bus and train companies don't exist to pander to drunkards too stupid to know their limits.
