Swimming Pool Water Rates
4 Answers
Hi everyone,
I'm thinking of buying a house that has a hot tub and swimming pool. I really want to know how much my water charges will be annually. The pool isn't huge but about medium-sized. The hot tub is pretty medium sized too. I just wanted to know, do hot tubs have separate pumps too? Altogether, how much would I have to pay in water charges by having a pool and hot tub?

My local water company charges 2.18 per cubic metre. Now, you're idea of 'medium-sized' might not be the same as mine, but I've been looking at one or two sites advertising pools and it seems that a 'medium ' pool might contain somewhere between 20 and 40 cubic metres. So, allowing a bit of leeway on either side, the cost of initially filling your pool might be somewhere between 40 and 100. Periodic topping up will be needed so you probably need to at least double these figures.
OK, these figures are far from being precise (and I've not even attempted to work out figures for the hot tub) but I hope that they provide a starting point for your more accurate calculations after you've taken some measurements.

Ask the current owner for a copy of his previous fuel and water bills. These may not necessarily reflect the cost of maintaining a swiming pool and hot tub because he may have frightened himself to death with the costs and not be using them currently but may give you some idea of water usage if units are quoted. Have you tried speaking to the Electricity authority in the area into which you're moving? They may be able to advise you.
