STYLE - Word 2007

I am trying to change the default style in word 2007, which seems to be set on double spacing (called 'normal'). I want to change to 'no spacing' and have tried using the 'on-board' help but without success. Although I change 'default' style to what I want, on closure of the program and reopening, it reverts to 'normal' - what I don't want. Any other thoughts please (other than constantly changing the style every time I open Word)?
