Scenario 1:
On arrival at the port you discover that your accommodation has been doubled-booked. Instead of the luxury outside cabin on an upper deck, which you'd booked, the only available available accommodation is a (much more basic) inner cabin close to the engines.
Under those circumstances the company have failed to meet their contractual obligation and they must provide you with compensation which (if you so demand) must be in cash.
Scenario 2:
Despite excellent hygiene standards onboard, a virus sweeps through the ship, making you ill for most of your trip. To make matter worse, a large wave (resulting from an earthquake on the ocean floor) results in you being thrown from your bunk, leaving you with a broken arm. To compound matters further, the ship is unable to dock at the port you most wished to visit, due to industrial action by port workers.
Under those circumstances the cruise company has no legal obligation to pay you a single penny in compensation (as none of the problems were due to their failings). However most companies would offer some form of compensation but that can take whatever form the company chooses as it's purely a goodwill gesture.

Happened to me once when The ships enginewas so loud It was impossible to sleep. They sent me a load of voucher which I took as an admission of fault. I did not use the vouchers and did not pursue the matter. I wish I had. If I were you I would refuse the vouchers and ask them to settle within say 14 days when you will consider what further action to take. If it gets that far your first call should be to the agent who sold you the cruise under the normal consumer protection laws. They will refer it to ABTA. If it gets as far as the courts the small claims court is quite inexpensive and you have a good chance of winning.
thanks everyone for your answers i have been offered as their letter says *A GESTURE OF GOODWILL TO SAY SORRY.what i am not sure is can i refuse them and ask for a cash refund as i usually book my cruises on internet and their voucher is redeemable at travel agencies only. it does say not transferable and cash alternative not possible. problem was drain smell for 8 days, and badly stained 4 pillows, which had to be put in garbage, also several othe r problems. any help would be grateful on what i grounds i have . thanks
