Helen (nelly) Campbell Brown Cant. Then she married and the surname McDowell was added. She was living in Glasgow during the war in bridgeton with her husband ( Samuel - Irish) and three children. Two boys and a girl. Some names are, William cant, Harry cant?

How common is the Cant name and how common is the Campbell Brown and if it's common why is it so? Is it double barrel and it's never hyphenated.

Very confusing and so many areas and names to find out about.

Any help at all muchly appreciated!

Ah thanks didn't see the history section! Will repost there and add what dates I can.
25 people with the name Cant listed in the Dundee telephone directory - checked because I used to work with someone with that surname. Think it might be more common in Scotland.
192.com only lists two people with the surname Campbell Brown in Glasgow (Beatrice M and Robert C) and they've not been on the edited register since 2002 (but that might just mean that they've elected not to have their names included on the edited electoral roll).
[Oddly, you need to hyphenate the surname in a search, in order to get the unhyphenated results]

192.com lists 128 people with the surname Cant currently in Glasgow (but, once again, there will probably be more who've simply had their names excluded from the edited roll). They include 4 Williams and a Harry but you'll have to subscribe to see the details.

As has been suggested, the Genealogy section (which is a subsection of History) might be the best place to post.

Thankyou everyone, it seems like a common name in Glasgow or generally in Scotland. The Campbell brown seemed less likely to be common but worth a try! More curious to see who is still alive and kicking that's related to me as they may have info also to find more history
I live just outside glasgow and i know mcdowells :)

Oh! Do u know if they have any connection to northern Ireland?
McDowell is a pretty common name and if you are talking west of Scotland, half the population will have some connection to Ireland. That could be a needle in a haystack job.
Don't think the Campbell Brown is hyphenated. Think it's just common to give children "middle names" which relate to a previous generation. My two middle names are the maiden surnames of my grandmother and mother. If Nelly Cant married Samuel McDowell then my assumption would be that at least two of her children were given her maiden surname "Cant" as a middle name.
maggie - that was my thoughts too - it also wouldn't surprise me if there was someone in the family with Campbell as a first name too. My elder brothers have my Gran's and my Mum's maiden names as middle names and my OH has his mum's maiden name as his first name and his Dad's Mum's maiden name as his middle name.
