lost log book and need to sell car, can i sell without it?

Want to avoid paying for a new log book,,, as a new one would have to be issued for the new owner is it essential you have to have it when selling the car?

You should have a Registration certificate (V5C) before you sell the car, it is an offence to fail to notify DVLA of a change of keeper, they are tightening up on this. As the vehicle will still be registered in your name then you will still have some responsibility for the vehicle.
You will receive the fines for not taxing it or any speed tickets the new owner incurrs.
You can sell it without a registration document, but do you want all the hassle this may cause you?

ANYBODY WITH ANY SENSE WOULD NOT BUY THE CAR WITHOUT SeEING THE ORIGINAL v5,as you have to give them the v5c part.

you dont have to pay for a copy - i recently lost mine and they sent me a new one within 2 days free

You DO have to pay for a lost V5...unless you fall in this catergory: -

❑ I am the new keeper and have the new keeper�s supplement (V5/2 or V5C/2) from the
Registration Certificate. (This MUST be attached to this application form.)

❑ The last Registration Certificate was destroyed by the insurance company because the
vehicle is categorised as �C� salvage.

Otherwise you have to pay. It is clealry stated on the V62 Form

Just pay the �25 and save ALL the hassle mate. No person with a brain will purchase any car without a V5 Log Book.

flippin hell, literally 3 weeks ago i rang up and they sent me a replacement copy! can't see how they are going to charge me unless i need to wait for a bill to drop on my mat!

it's also free if you havent recieved the last v5c issued to you, but only if you report it within 3 months of it being issued or if they notice there has been a slight error with spelling of name/ address or postcode.

Well I too have lost my V5 document and was supposed to be selling car on Friday and picking up new one. Unfortunately I was told that I had to pay �25 for a new one and it would take 3-5 days. Therefore I cannot pick my new car up yet. I'm SO annoyed with myself. I'm off home for a thorough search tonight before I fork out the �25. What a rip-off!!!

I have recently moned country from Germany to England ( as Im in the army) I have recently lost my licence and Then I called the DVLA they said I cannot register the car in England as I no longer have my licence and I cannot get my log book without having a licence?

My car was registered in Germany well I was there but since I have been back in England I have lost my licence and having trouble registering the car in the UK.
I called the DVLA and they said only the name driver can re register the car but has to have a licence and I dont so I dont no what to do to re register my car to get my log book back

If you no longer have your registration certificate V5C

If you don't have a registration certificate you can still tell DVLA that you no longer have the vehicle.

To do this you will need to write to DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1AR giving the:

•vehicle registration mark
•make and model
•exact date of sale
•name and address of the new keeper
However, note that DVLA records won’t be complete until the new keeper tells DVLA in writing. Until they do, the police may need to contact you if they have to make enquiries about the vehicle.
