My granny's sweet rice pudding with a browned skin top, cooked slowly, maybe all day, in the oven of the cast iron black range, in a large brown dish, heated only by the coal fire in the adjoining grate. The same, patient method for her Lancashire hotpot and short pastry crust, or barley broth, or thick pea and ham soup, with the ham bone in the mix, with best patted butter and fresh crusty bread. My word, who needs steroids?. Let go granny's cooking? I can't. My childhood memories say I will never taste its like again.

Sibton - my children go mad for tomato soup (it's regarded as a mega treat) but they have to have it with freshly baked bread and cheese sticks to melt into it.

Sibton - should add that I cheat and buy part baked bread (my bread machine can't make enough dough to satisfy them) and the soup is Heinz. Actually, it is boy #2's birthday tomorrow so I might get some in for an after-birthday treat on Saturday.

When we were kids during the war we used to gather round a greengrocer to admire the pictures of bananas and look forward to having one of these delicacies. We were all in love with bananas but the real thing was a bit of a letdown after our fantasies.

I can remember the first orange I ever had, my uncle who was in the R.A.F came home on leave and brought two. Mum peeled them and shared them segment by segment between me and my two sisters and me getting the last extra segment because it was my birthday
