We are a couple about to private rent at the end of feb and the bloke who we are renting off has asked for our bank details, addresses, DOB and national insurance numbers - is he allowed to ask for this and should we give them out? im a little dubious since its a private rentor and not through an agency? He hasnt charged us a deposit so i cant see why its going to be a problem giving him the details?
I rent privately, but landlord has none of the above, I have a standing order set up where rent paid each month, but I did put down a deposit to start with. Why not ask why he needs all this information.
He may want to check you have the right to work in the UK and are not illegal immigrants , that would be a reason for wanting your NI numbers. Housing illegal immigrants is a crime so he needs to be safe. Bank details are normal security questions. He can not do anything with your bank details unless you also give him your bank cards and PIN. Very unusual not to take a deposit though he has no security against you 'doing a runner' and leaving rent arrears.
Check with the private tenants officer or equivalent with your local council... do not give NI numbers, or d/o/b he doesn't need them and ask him for his bank details to set up the S/O for rent he doesn't need yours sounds very iffy to me. I'd try and find somewhere else in the interim before you sign any contracts
