Personally, I believe that similar retribution ought to be "performed" on them, and I for one would be at the head of any queue to administer it, armed with suitably blunt and rusty axe!

Of course you do. All right minded folk have the same gut reaction. But you just have to get it out of your system and then remember you are a rational human being.

That is foul, how can anyone do that to a sentient (and presumably alive at the time) animal?

I don't know how the perpetrators will be found, but I hope they are and that the law of the land will prevail. I'm sure that others would like to deal with them more personally.

Only one of you, like me, is right here. With a maximum incarceration period of a mere 51 weeks, plus a maximum fine of £20K, the law on this type of crime is light years out of date.

The ONLY way to create a deterrent is to ensure that the punishment DOES fit the crime. The subhuman knuckledraggers who perpetrated this heinous crime on a docile animal deserve no mercy.

The thing with the so called ' Satanic Calandar' is though that every month there are at least 2 dates where animal sacrifice is called for so seems strange anyone has bothered to highlight this particular date, the other thing being that all this nonsense is just something a group of individuals thought up in the 1960's to satiate their own macabre ideas. Other than this attack happening on St. Winebald's Day, there is no evidence that this was a satanic ritual. Unfortunately horses (along with most animals) are frequently attacked.

These are horrifyingly macabre and sadistic crimes committed by the dregs of society on innocent and defenceless animals.

But these type of crimes are not just confined to animals, there are also much worse crimes committed by unspeakable sadistic and savage individuals on human beings.

Two suspects are now on trial in the Old Bailey over this, but it is strange that no one seems to have been concerned enough to open a thread on this.

eyethenkyew - as long as dreadful crimes have been committed against people or animals, there has been a long queue of people joining the Self-Righteous Brothers - the select band who give themselves headaches with their desire to convince the world that only their individual sense of outrage is eclipsed by their desire for sadistic and inventive retribution.

Back in the real world - cruel though this animal's death obviously is, it is clear that his teeth and genitalia have been removed post-mortem - I can't see an animal the size and strength of a horse submitting to this treatment while consious and upright.

And in common with almost all the SRB's in the world - I think if it actually came to it, that your outrage and thirst for revenge would evaporate in in instant - it takes an especially cold personality to be able to inflict pain and suffering on another - no matter how you may perceive them as deserving of it.

Absolutely no "self righteousness" or "thirst for revenge" here - only justice for the totally unnecessary and gratuitous slaughter of a friendly and docile creature which must have suffered a horrific fate.

And no, I would certainly not baulk at carrying out such justice on the sub human(s) who perpetrated the callous and cravenly cowardly act. Their demise could only do the human race, plus helpless animals, a great favour.

I agree with pretty much everything you've said, Andy, apart from this. There's more than enough evidence (mostly from social psychology but I'd be surprised if there wasn't some investigation into it from neuroscience as well) suggesting that even average, normal people can be gotten to willingly do terrible things in the right circumstances or with the right emotional setup. So I disagree - I think, accepting the difficulty of generalisations, many of the self-righteous you refer to would willingly throw the switch. How they'd feel about it after, on the other hand, might be a different question...

Like many of my posts, I do worry about this seeming pedantic, but it's really not intended that way at all - it makes an important difference to the kind of discussion we're having.
