Really struggling with this one. Much prefer PHI! Don't understand the relevance of the +.

18d ??E/?I?? In bad period, bishop stands in for a parson of sorts. Is the second word TIME?

Poe bird aka Parson bird
18d Poe-bird (NZ parson bird) - b(ishop) (in) anag (bad) 'period'
The + signs spell out an 8 letter word (accross then down) o help with the edge clues.
The plussigns are anagrams bdavies .
For example ...1+17 on the down clues
Rebound and bounder .
Return and swine .
Took a while for the penny to drop for me too .)

Thanks Lie-in King! Never heard of POE-BIRD but Mamyalynne defines and it makes perfect sense. So HURRY UP is correct then for 17ac? Again, can't work out why.

Sorry for the confusion, it's actually 19ac and WyeDyed answered it.

17ac is also 5,2, and ends UP but starts with B, I think. Clue is 'Rear stop'.
