95% of this surgery is carried out as a result of vanity. Those patients who had them fitted as part of breast re-construction should of course have them removed at the earliest opportunity and should take priority. As for the others I fail to see why the NHS should pick up the tab for removing/replacing the implants and the onus should fall on the private sector who implanted them initially.



On a personal note, looks like I may be in for some overtime in the coming months!

sp - smokers don't get new lungs 'just in case' and fat people don't get a new heart 'just in case' so I fail to see why we should have to pay for the removal of these implants just in case they leak.

I have no objection to the NHS paying for the removal if they leak.

There are far more important things the NHS should do with their money than removing implants just in case they leak.

Many women have implants because they have low self-esteem, but most have them for reasons of vanity.

I agree philtaz, anyone who goes through breast enhancement for personal vanity should pay or sue the clinic for the removal. The private clinics should be responsible for vetting the safety aspects of the implants being used in the same way as the NHS would. Those who had the implants for a medical reconstruction by the NHS should be given the free removal and if possible an alternative.

Well put DT. People don't realise how much brainwashing there is out there.
Beauty comes from within and has nowt to do with page 3.
Save NHS cash for necessary ops (unless somebody is actually being poisoned by a failed implant).

Well I doubt anyone considers small breasts as a life threatening condition that needs to be cured.

I am not saying it is OG, I just wish people would stop claiming that all the women who have implants (except reconstruction) are having it done for the sake of vanity.

I have already stated that I don't think the NHS should pay for removal of the implants.
