Last two left. Why are the 4 letter clues always the hardest?

22ac - Like a slippery catch, hard for the blessed fellow to miss! (4) e-l-
I presume EELY but don't see why

24d - Count beads removed from casting (4) e-r-
Again, I guess it's EARL but can't work out why
