Explanation of some answers please.

I have only recently started doing this puzzle and wonder if anyone can help explain what I believe to be the answers to a couple of the clues in this weekend's version.

35a Pork's tender with champagne, say, in some stove pot? (9) SWINEHERD
Pork=swine but champagne and stove pot?
44a British, composed, no wife- that's him(7) BRITTAN -I presume no wife is more than just unmarried?

Swineherd (pork's [pig's] tender) - 'wine' (champagne, say) (in) 'sherd' (alt. sp of 'shard' - broken [stove] pot)

Britten - B(ritish) + (w)ritten) - 'composed', no w(ife)

plus (w) ritten written (composed) without the (w)ife
= Britten
