I really want to start swimming but it's been many years and I am worried about weight issues. I have a costume but is there anything else I can wear over the top/with it in the pool to save my modesty? I'm not sure about sarongs or T-shirts etc- do people wear these in the pool?

You would look more conspicious with a t-shirt over your cozzie than if you just got in and cracked on with your swimming... I notice things like that when I'm swiming far more than I notice peoples weight which I generally couldn't give a monkeys about as I'm not there to chat to other people... mostly other swimmers are as anti-social and focused on the swim as me in my experience so don't worry about it :c)
Please, please don't worry. Just wear an all in one swimsuit. You will find that there will be loads of people with far worse bodies than you have. Nobody will take any notice. But you can wear a T shirt over a swimsuit. A sarong would just get in the way.
Agree with China. Nobody will be looking at you. Don't worry.

Enjoy yourself
Forgive the directness but, if you think you look fat in your cossie, a wet T-shirt over the top of that is only going to be worse!

I think you might be pleasantly surprised by just how little everyone else will be interested...
Very true Mark.
All I ask is that people don't go in the fast lane if they're not fast and put their bloody faces in the water when doing breast stoke as it gives me the giggles when they don't... that's as interested in other people as I get at swimming. Unless I get compettative with a random stranger who does not realise we are now racing...
China, I simply can't put my face underwater under any circumstances, unless in the shower. I would never make a good swimmer. I swim just like you describe :o( . But not in the fast lane. I don't like swimming that much but would go for the sake of my health - but we don't have any swimming pools in this bloomin' town and I don't want to travel 15 miles!!!
My mum does it too LL cause she has meniers and doesn't like getting water in her ears so I have some sympathy but it does still make me giggle.... although if you really want to pee me off, swim with your head out the water with your mate in tandem chatting to them in front of me in the fast lane... I get a bit narky then.

Never cared about the size of anyone in the pool though, we're all there for the same reason.
If I go swimming ? I have to be alert for japanese whaling ships but apart from that no one seems to bother
my aunt wore one of these - doesn't need it now, has lost loads of weight through her new love for swimming, has changed her life!! As others say though, really nobody is bothering what you look like so just go for it xx

I am very conscious of my legs when i go swimming in particular my chunky flabbing all over the place thighs so i wear a pair of swimming shorts like men wear over the top of my swimming costume or tankini bottoms just to hide the worst bit and get on with it! I considered a t-shirt too but thought it would make things look worse. Good luck!
What about something like this?

hi sade,
im a big girl too, and i fully understand your concerns,
i dont actually go to a public swimming baths, but i do occasionally have a dip in my aunties big heated indoor pool with family, and i wear one of those swim dresses that joannie suggested.
mine's a navy blue and white patterned one, and it looks and feels a treat. i've had many a compliment on how nice i look in it. (and it covers up the tops of the legs, nicely)

i do understand you feeling self concious and all that, but, like everyone else has said, nobodys going to take any notice of you.
and once you're in the water, well you'll be fine.
maybe have a towel handy for when you step out, just so you can 'casually' drape/hang it infront/around you till you get to the changing rooms. but if you get one of those dress cozzies, you wont need it.

enjoy your swim, sadie :o)
Good for you, sade - I'm selfconscious too, but I wear an all in one, and tbh other people there are far bigger than me, you won't be noticed. Most public pools round here have banned wearing t-shirts on safety grounds so I wouldn't think about that - they're not flattering when wet, anyway!
I swim a lot Sade and the last thing I worry about is looking at other people or their figures. Besides, I can't see more than a few feet without my glasses so everyone looks like a blurry shape anyway. I'm certainly no Adonis and I could do with losing some weight but I don't ever think anyone notices me.

I think you'll find that no one in the pool takes a blind bit of notice of other swimmers Sade, except to keep out of their way. However, if you start wearing unusual things in the pool then you might start drawing the attention of everyone.

It might be worth you finding out when your pool is quiet. When I can't sleep I sometimes go swimming when my pool opens at 6.30am. It's very quiet then. It's also quiet mid-morning and mid-afternoon, especially when the school groups have gone home.

As I said, if you just go swimming the same as everyone else I don't think anyone will pay you much attention. Good luck.

Thanks everyone- some great links here and kind words too! x x
I totally agree with most post on here... you will be more noticed if wear something conspicuous and draw attention to yourself, as most have pointed out, all there for the same reason... to swim. Good on ya' after all I've eaten and drunk over Christmas and the new year I have a whopping great 2lbs to loose.
As everyone else has said, nobody really looks at you whilst you are swimming - the only thing that I do is have a nice bif towel waiting for me by the steps to wrap around me when I get out! Have a nice time!
