saturday night, after a busy and stressful week and I finally collapsed into my recliner, feet up, choccy bar and glass of wine at the ready, 20mins later the phone rings, "would I take part in a survey on what people do in their leisure time" ? nearly nine o'clock on Saturday night, no I will not, how would you feel about this?
I just said "no thanks" and hung up, although i felt like saying something a lot ruder, it was being disturbed on a Saturday night that upset me more than anything.
I hate answering surveys and chatting to cold callers, even though we have the Telephone Preference Service to block calls we still get them. Mr Ask will talk to anyone and string them along. Although, he has been known to pass me the 'phone to talk about broadband when I'm up to my elbows in washing up water, that drives me mad.
The only calls we get on the house phone are cold callers, wrong numbers and my son's school. Everyone else calls our mobiles as we (and they) get free O2 to O2 calls.
Beware of the ones where you're asked a question (e.g. "Would you be interested in supporting a charity for sick horses?") followed by the statement "The responses I have available are 'Yes' and 'Possibly' "). Whatever you say you'll still end up being bombarded with phone calls from the relevant organisation!
(Written from experience!)
A large part of the casual work I get involves stopping pedestrians and cyclists, in order to persuade them to complete a survey (e.g. for the EU Bike-friendly Cities Project, Sustrans' Cycle Routes, Leicester City Council's Pedestrianisation Scheme, Braintree District Council's survey of taxi users, St Edmunsbury Council's car parking survey or the Hastings Bus Partnership).
So I always have a certain amount of sympathy for those who're collecting data from others ;-)
I keep getting phoned at work offering alternative energy packages. They get my back up straight away by saying how are you today etc, and I think, you dont even know me, so wont answer things like that. Then I say I am at work and this is not a good time, but they are not put off and say things like, this will only take a minute. I then cut the conversation short but without any actual swear words. (sometimes same company twice in one afternoon)
