My kitchen ceiling is artexed and in need of a new coat of paint. It is likely to be greasy with cooking fumes, can I just repaint or do I need to wash it first? If so, what do I use?
Thanks

Agree with 2shortplanks
Despite all the modern potions and sealers available today, Dilly ............. sugar soap still works a treat :o)
Yes you need to wash it, using plenty of sodium carbonate (which is strongly alkaline and cuts through grease brilliantly).

No, you don't need to phone ICI to get hold of it! It's cheap and widely available in supermarkets, DIY stores, etc as 'washing soda' or 'soda crystals'.

NB: Wear rubber gloves and eye protection.

Those other answers weren't there when I started typing but there's no real conflict anyway. The active ingredient in sugar soap is still sodium carbonate.
agree........................so no shortcuts.......I tried to short cut.....and never got over the goo coming through

Thanks guys, that's really helpful. Will get soda crystals from the supermarket....
We paint straight over our Artex kitchen ceiling using kitchen and bathroom paint - never had a problem with grease seeping through.
